Naming your page:Giving each of your pages a meaningful name is probably one of the easiest, and yet one of the most important things that you can do for your website. Most sites that you go to may have a name of sorts on the start page, maybe the name of the website, let's say it's called 'Sue's Parlour' and Sue sells lots of beauty products from her salon in Townsville, her speciality being anti aging skin creams. Great... good for Sue. That's all well and good, but will it be of any assistance when she wants people to find her site via the Search Engines (SE's) ? Well, if they're entering 'Sue's Parlour' as the search query, they'll probably find her straight away. Of course, if they've entered 'Sue's Parlour' into the search engine, they already knew about her so it's really a redundant search. There's not much point in Sue giving her pages too general a name either. For example, if every second website is selling beauty products, it's going to prove very difficult for her to get her website to the top of the search results because it's going to have to be that much better than all other sites which offer the same services or products. What can she do?
SEOSue needs to take the first step to optimising her website by naming her page descriptively. What does that mean exactly? She needs to use a phrase describing her products and/or her location, (ideally it will be both) and enter that phrase into her Title tags which are contained in the <head> section of her page. We've already heard that Sue sells anti aging cream and offers treatments to combat old age wrinkles, and we know that her salon is located in Townsville, so we create our page name using that information. The page name would be something along the lines of 'Anti Aging Creams and Treatments in Townsville'. She then just repeats this process for all her pages. We skip quickly along to our potential customer who resides just outside Townsville, she is looking for information on anti aging creams. She types her query into the search engine, it's going to be something like 'anti aging townsville', you can guess whose site is going to come up in the search results. So then, why dont we name our page with that info in mind? In between the title tags <title></title> in the <Head> section of your page, enter your new page name. So now your Title tags should look like : <title>Anti Aging Creams and Treatments in Townsville</title> You've just completed your first lesson in Search Engine Optimization!! Congratulatons. Now the SE's have something to get their claws into.
Something else to consider when saving your page in the initial stages is the use of spaces in the filename, ie, instead of 'widgets in townsville.html', use 'widgets-in-townsville.html' or 'widgets_in_townsville.html'. Incidentally, if you ever wondered why there was a '%20' between the words in the filenames of some websites, now you know. :-)
